The Evolution of the Food Centre

The Plymouth Estate is no stranger to innovation and diversification and the Food Centre is just the latest example. The Estate is a living community and it is only by constantly innovating and exploiting new sources of income that its long term survival will be assured - hence the Food Centre. On this occasion Viscount Windsor enlisted the help of Sandy Boyd who was responsible for developing the Chatsworth Farm Shop into the success it now is, and together they have created something quite unique. It brings together the consumer and the producer in an innovative way and ensures that the customer has access to the very best of local produce available, in attractive surroundings, with knowledgeable staff on hand to answer all those questions you’ve never dared to ask! We firmly believe that education will lead to a better understanding and appreciation of good food. We support Carlo Petrini’s aim of providing food that is good (healthy and delicious), clean (produced sustainably in ways that are sensitive to the environment) and fair (produced with respect for social justice). Carlo Petrini is president of Slow Food International.

It is now over twelve months since the Centre first opened its doors and the current level of trading suggests that the combination of quality and local has struck a chord with the public at large. The Centre attracts people from a very wide area which benefits both Ludlow and the surrounding district. Fresh produce is sourced locally and an ever increasing proportion of the items on sale are made within the Centre itself. Perhaps we should adopt the mantra “real food from real producers made on our own premises”!
